What does it Cost?
The Sydney Gastric Balloon fee includes:
- 12 months of complete weight management covering all the medical fees, lifestyle programme and comprehensive follow-up.
- The cost of the balloon prosthesis
- Gastroenterologist, Anaesthetist and day surgery fees for gastric balloon insertion, one adjustment procedure and the removal procedures
- All medical reviews for check-ups with either the Gastroenterologist or Primary care physician. This includes appointments every month for the first 6 months and then two further checks in the 6 months after your balloon is removed
- Open access for additional medical consultations at any time if problems arise
- 8 x dietitian and nutritionist consultations; one prior to the balloon insertion, then monthly for 6 months and one further appointment after balloon removal
- 5 x exercise consultant appointments.
Is there anything else to pay?
There are some other small costs to consider which are standard for any day surgery procedure: the health fund excess you may be required to pay under your health fund policy, and occasionally tests such as an Xray, ECG's or external physician's consultation may be needed depending on your medical history. However the major costs have all been covered by your once-off initial payment.
Private Health Insurance
Because the Gastric Balloon procedure is not currently covered by the Medical Benefits Scheme (MBS), Private Insurance companies will not cover the cost of the procedure or weight loss programme. Some ancillary costs are covered and there will be a reduction in your overall fee.
Tax Rebate Scheme
A significant rebate may be able to be claimed through your end of year tax return. You can claim a tax offset of 20% of your net medical expenses over $1,500. There is no upper limit on the amount you can claim, and it is not means or assets tested.
For example:
- $6000 Out-of-pocket expense: tax rebate = ($6000 - $1500) x 20% = $900
As always, check with your accountant or financial advisor if this may apply to you. Further details can be found on the Australian Taxation Office website.
