About the Gastric Balloon

Intragastric Balloon System

The Intra Gastric Balloon is a non-surgical procedure available for weight loss. A soft, expandable, silicone balloon is placed inside the stomach via a camera that enters through the mouth.  Once inserted into the stomach, the empty balloon is filled with sterile saline, occupying a large part of the stomach, creating a feeling of fullness. When used in conjunction with our 12 month lifestyle programme, you have the best chance of sustainable, safe and effective weight loss.

ORBERA BALLOON INSERTION

Placement of the  intragastric balloon takes approximately 20-to-30 minutes to perform by a team of qualified gastroenterologists. Because the balloon is inserted and removed in a day clinic and does not involve surgery, it is considered to be a minimally invasive procedure. The risk of complications therefore is significantly less than obesity surgery. The intra gastric balloon is completely reversible, and effective in reducing hunger, controlling food intake, initiating behavioural change, and achieving target weight loss of 10 to 35kg.

ORBERA BALLOON REMOVAL

(mpg version of the movie above: removal.mpg)

The Intra Gastric Balloon remains in the stomach for a 6-12 month period, where it is then removed the same way it was placed. If you have a SPATZ® balloon, this may be adjusted once or more during the 12 month implantation. The team at Sydney Gastric Balloon offers the placement and removal of the balloon in conjunction with their 12 month, medically-supervised lifestyle retraining programme, including an allied health team, to ensure maximum results during the balloon placement, and maintenance of weight once the balloon is removed.
